Dental Crowns Near You
You may require a dental crown if you have recently undergone root canal therapy or if you have a broken or weakened tooth. Dental crowns are small caps placed over a damaged tooth to restore its strength and provide it protection. At Maple Ridge Family Dental, we are happy to provide dental crowns in London, ON.
Who Needs Dental Crowns?
Individuals who may require dental crowns include:
- Those with weakened or severely decayed teeth
- Those who are getting dental restorations such as dental bridges
- Those with broken teeth
Dental crowns work to restore the function of your tooth while also enhancing its appearance.
What Are the Types of Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns come in many forms, and your dentist will speak to you about which type of dental crown is most suitable for your needs.
Metal Crowns: These are very durable crowns that are made out of gold. They are long-lasting and don’t’ tend to wear down your surrounding teeth.
Composite Crowns: These are tooth-colored crowns that are increasing in popularity due to their ability to blend in seamlessly with your natural teeth. While still durable, they tend to wear down faster than metal crowns.
Porcelain Crowns: Porcelain crowns also provide a natural look but are more susceptible to damage than other types of crowns.
Porcelain-fused-to-metal Crowns: These dental crowns also provide a natural appearance, but as they are fused to metal, they are much more durable than either composite or porcelain crowns.
What is the Process for Dental Crowns?
To get a dental crown, your dentist must first file down your affected tooth so that the crown can fit over it. It is important to understand that dental crowns are a permanent decision and that once your dentist files down your tooth, it will always require the protection of a dental crown.
It will take two visits to Maple Ridge Family Dental to have your dental crown placed. At this first visit, our London dentist will prepare your tooth for the crown and take impressions of it that are to be sent to a dental laboratory where your custom crowns will be created. While you wait for your custom crowns to be made, your dentist will fit you with a temporary crown.
At your second visit, usually, about 1-2 weeks later, your permanent crown will be placed, and any final adjustments will be made.
