Simple vs. Surgical Tooth Extractions
There are two main types of tooth extractions:
Simple Tooth Extractions: Simple tooth extractions are performed on teeth that can be seen above the gum line. Your dentist will gently loosen the affected tooth using a special instrument to wiggle it back and forth until it is loose enough to lift out of its socket.
Surgical Tooth Extractions: Sometimes, a tooth needs to be removed that is still below the gum line, such as a wisdom tooth. In these cases, your dentist will create a small incision in your gum tissue to reach the affected tooth and remove it before cleaning the area and suturing it closed.
Healing Period
You should feel back to yourself within 1-2 weeks after receiving tooth extractions with the proper aftercare. It is normal to have some bleeding and swelling, which can be addressed with ice compresses and gauze pieces. Most of the time, over-the-counter painkillers are enough to ease discomfort, but you may be also be prescribed painkillers and antibiotics to take from your dentist, and you must take these medications as directed.
